Professional Training

The Institute is accredited as a continuing education provider (PCE 1633) by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences for MFTs and LCSWs. FTI offers local small group training opportunities, annual one-day or two-day workshops with national experts, and individualized training, supervision and consultation with senior clinical staff.

Advanced Topics in Integrative Psychotherapy
For the past six years, Debra Manchester has been providing quarterly clinical training seminars on Saturday mornings from 9am to 12 pm. Each session is on a different clinical topic such as Working with Resistant Couples, The Use of Paradox, Treating Difficult Adolescents, etc. The format includes reading material, lecture, discussion and when appropriate, videotaped material. Once each year, Deb provides three hours of mandatory training in Law and Ethics as well as Advanced Topics in Supervision. By taking these courses each year, MFT’s and LCSW’s continue to meet their biannual licensing commitment (6 CEU’s every 2 years).

One-day and Two-day Workshops
The Institute also offers annual workshops on a variety of topics for professionals and students who wish to strengthen or broaden their therapeutic approaches. On a case-by-case basis, these workshops are typically approved for psychologists and registered nurses.

The 2010 workshop has not yet been scheduled. Look for information on our website early next year.

Internships

FTI offers a complete internship program for therapists who have completed their Master’s degrees and are in their final hours of training prior to licensure. Our internships require a minimum commitment of one year and are generally unpaid. We do not offer on-site practicum training for people who have not completed their graduate educational programs.

Consultation

On therapy cases:

Therapists who want input on challenging cases frequently consult with our senior training faculty. Interventions include supervision, live observations, review of video or audiotapes, and “sitting in” on on-going sessions.

To schools:
FTI staff are available for on-site case consultation to principals, teachers and school counselors, and for liaison work between schools, students and parents. FTI staff provide many services to students within local schools as well as in-service training to teachers, staff and parents upon request.

To other agencies:

Therapists are available to consult with other counseling, medical, legal and law enforcement agencies, private businesses and individuals. Areas of expertise include
systems analysis, law and ethics, on-site case consultation, and training in specific topics regarding work with couples, families, teens and children.
